2008-2009 Visual Arts Contest Rules

1.  THEME:
“How the History and Heritage of a Cultural Group Have Contributed to San Antonio.”


2.  WHO:
Public, private or home-schooled students, grades 6-12 as of February 28, 2009.  Entrants must live in Bexar County or these seven adjacent counties (Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson).  Each student artist may submit only one entry per year.  Previous winners can compete in subsequent grade level contests.


3. ENTRY FORM:
Fill out the 2-page entry form, which includes some basic questions about yourself and your selected cultural group.


4.  ART SPECIFICATIONS: 
Each entry must be the original work of the student artist submitting the artwork.  The entry must be accompanied by a 50-100 word written description of the meaning of the entry and how it represents this year’s theme.  The entry should reflect reading and research in local history.

Dimensions of entries: Flat art, 16 inches x 20 inches.

The artwork may be produced using any medium (i.e., watercolor, ink, crayon, acrylic, charcoal, oils, collage, photograph, computer-generated imaging) provided that they are not three-dimensional.  The artwork may not contain copyrighted material.

No signatures or initials may appear on the front of the design.  Any artwork with such identifying characteristics will be disqualified and eliminated from the competition.


5. JUDGING: Entries will be judged by grade-level and on:

a)  How well they interpret the theme
b)  The quality of the artwork

Professionals from San Antonio academic and the local visual arts communities will judge entries.  The contest organizers reserve the right to not award in a particular grade level based on the quality of the entries.


6.  PRIZES:

a)  Winner – One winner in each grade level will receive one $1,000.00 scholarship to The University of the Incarnate Word.
b)  Honorable Mention (one each in each grade level): Certificate


7.  SUBMISSION:

The entry must include the artwork, the 50-100 word written description of the meaning of the entry, and the completed entry form.  Entries should be mailed in a protective envelope to the following address and must be postmarked by February 28, 2009.

The 50-100 word written description of the meaning of the entry must be signed by the student artist and securely attached to the back of the actual artwork in the upper right hand corner.  (NOTE:  Upper right hand corner placement of the description on the back of the entry will also show the judges how to orient the entry for judging.)

Artwork will be disqualified for:

• Missing, incomplete or illegible description and/or entry form.
• Inappropriately sized and/or mounted material.
• Use of copyrighted materials.
• Three-dimensional art.

8.  EXHIBITION:

Winning and Honorable Mention entries in each grade-level will be displayed at the 2009 San Antonio Founders Day event (Saturday, October 24, 2009).


9.  DISCLAIMERS:
The entries will be unsecured at times.  SAFDA will not insure entries it receives.  Please be aware of this before submitting your entry.  Neither The University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio Founders Day Alliance nor San Antonio’s Founding Heritage can be held liable for any loss or damage to art submitted to the contest.  Any monies realized from the sale or licensing of the artwork will be used to support the contest and SAFDA education initiatives.  The winning artists must provide autographs without charge to San Antonio Founders Day Alliance.

By submitting an entry to the contest, the student artist agrees to the above disclaimer, and grants SAFDA the right to photograph the entry and display such photograph as it deems appropriate, i.e., on the internet or in print publications for advertising or informational purposes.  Creator retains the right of ownership of any art submitted to the contest and is responsible to retrieve the entry upon notification.
